Chapter 14: The Choice That Changed Everything
Nobody spoke after Marcus saw the picture.
Not because we were confused.
Because we understood.
The person in the photograph was him.
But not the way everyone thought.
Claire immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
She pointed at the picture.
“Look closer.””
Marcus took it.
His hands shook.
The room waited.
After a few seconds, his expression changed.
“This isn’t me.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
Claire nodded.
“That’s why your mother kept the photo.””
Marcus looked at it again.
“The person is wearing my jacket.””
“And using your identity,” Claire said.
David stepped closer.
“So someone was pretending to be Marcus.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa looked overwhelmed.
“How long has this been happening?””
My mother’s notebook had the answer.
I opened it.
The pages were filled with dates.
Names.
Notes.
My mother had been investigating for months.
“She knew someone was copying Dad.””
Marcus looked at me.
“She was trying to protect me.””
I nodded.
“But she was also trying to expose them.””
I turned the page.
Then I saw something.
A name.
A name that appeared over and over.
My hands froze.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“Who is this?””
I showed him.
The name.
His face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He grabbed the notebook.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Everyone moved closer.
Claire whispered:
“Who is it?””
Marcus stared at the name.
“It’s my brother.””
Silence.
I had heard stories about my father’s brother.
But only pieces.
An uncle who moved away.
A man nobody talked about.
A man who disappeared from our lives.
“Your brother?”” I asked.
Marcus nodded.
“Leon.””
Claire looked shocked.
“Leon Carter?””
Marcus looked at her.
“You know him?””
Claire’s expression changed.
“I knew your mother was investigating him.””
My stomach dropped.
“Why?””
Marcus sat down.
“Because Leon always hated me.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because our father left him everything.””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“I was the son who stayed. The one who built a family. Leon thought I took the life he deserved.””
Claire added:
“He believed Marcus had stolen his future.””
I looked at the notebook.
“So he framed you?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“He had access to my clothes. My phone records. My accounts.””
Vanessa whispered:
“And Mom helped him?””
Everyone looked at Denise.
She immediately shook her head.
“No.””
For once, her answer sounded genuine.
“I knew Leon was angry.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know what he was planning.””
She looked ashamed.
“I thought he was just bitter.””
Claire opened another file from the box.
“There’s more.””
She handed it to Marcus.
Inside were bank records.
Payments.
Messages.
Marcus read them.
Then his face became empty.
“What?””
I asked.
He looked at me.
“Leon wasn’t just trying to hurt me.””
“What was he trying to do?””
Marcus looked at the documents.
“He wanted my life.””
The words chilled me.
Claire nodded.
“He wanted Marcus’s family, reputation, money.””
David looked at Denise.
“And he used you.””
Denise looked away.
“I didn’t know.””
Marcus stood.
For the first time all day, his anger wasn’t directed at Denise.
It was somewhere else.
“Where is he?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire looked at the flash drive.
“Your mother recorded something.””
We all froze.
She connected it to the laptop.
A video appeared.
My mother.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
I covered my mouth.
Hearing her voice after all these years felt impossible.
“Maya,” she said.
Everyone went silent.
“If you’re watching this, then I didn’t get the chance to tell you myself.””
Tears streamed down my face.
“I need you to know something.””
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“Your father never betrayed me.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“But someone wanted you to believe he did.””
The video continued.
“I found out who was behind everything.””
A pause.
Then my mother said the name.
“Leon.””
My heart pounded.
“He was the one who caused the accident.””
Marcus looked away.
Then came the final sentence.
The one that changed everything.
“But he didn’t act alone.””
The video paused.
A second later, a new image appeared.
A person standing beside Leon.
Someone helping him.
Someone nobody expected.
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Because the person beside Leon was…
Claire.
