Chapter 7: The Truth Beneath the Photograph

Nobody moved.

The message on Vanessa’s phone stayed glowing in the center of the room.

She didn’t die by accident.

Six words.

Six words that turned a painful family secret into something much darker.

I looked at my father.

For years, I had watched Marcus Carter handle everything.

Bills.

Problems.

Loss.

He was the person everyone leaned on.

But now his hands were shaking.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

His eyes were fixed on the photograph.

The picture showed Denise standing beside a man I had never seen before.

And behind them was my mother.

Alive.

Smiling.

My stomach twisted.

“How do you have this?”” Marcus asked Vanessa.

She looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

“Who sent it?””

“It says unknown number.””

Marcus immediately took out his phone.

“Don’t delete anything.””

Vanessa nodded.

For once, she didn’t argue.

She looked small.

Like the confidence she carried for years had finally disappeared.

Denise, however, looked different.

Not scared.

Calculating.

She walked toward Vanessa.

“Give me the phone.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“Why?””

“Because this is private.””

“No.””

The word came quietly.

But firmly.

Denise stopped.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa looked at her mother.

“I said no.””

Something changed between them.

A line had been crossed.

Marcus noticed too.

“Vanessa is right.””

Denise looked at him.

“You’re taking her side now?””

He shook his head.

“I’m finally listening.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.

I stared at Denise.

A woman who had spent years telling me she was protecting her family.

But every secret she kept seemed to hurt someone.

“Who was the man in the picture?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I looked at my father.

“Dad.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“His name was David Williams.””

Vanessa looked away.

“My biological father.””

Marcus nodded.

“But that picture…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“What?””

He looked at Denise.

“She told me David disappeared before Vanessa was born.””

Denise crossed her arms.

“He did.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Then why is he standing beside your house in this picture?””

Denise’s face tightened.

“I don’t know.””

The answer came too quickly.

Nobody believed it.

Not even Vanessa.

I walked closer to the picture.

My mother’s face bothered me.

Not because she looked afraid.

Because she looked like she knew something.

Something she wanted to tell us.

“Mom was investigating this.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“She was.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His expression broke.

“Because after she died, I couldn’t handle losing you too.””

“That doesn’t explain hiding everything.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“I know, Maya.””

For the first time, I saw my father admit he was wrong.

Not just about today.

About years of silence.

A knock suddenly came from the bedroom door.

Everyone turned.

Nobody had heard anyone approach.

Marcus immediately moved in front of me.

“Who is it?””

No answer.

Then a voice.

A man’s voice.

“Marcus?””

Vanessa froze.

Her face lost all color.

“No…”

Everyone looked at her.

“What?”” I whispered.

She stared at the door.

“That voice.””

The handle slowly turned.

The door opened.

And a man stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But with the same eyes Vanessa had.

Marcus went completely still.

The man looked around the room.

His gaze landed on Vanessa.

And tears filled his eyes.

“Vanessa.””

She couldn’t breathe.

“Who are you?””

The man swallowed.

“My name is David.””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa stared at him.

“My father?””

David nodded.

“I’ve been trying to find you for twenty years.””

Denise stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

David looked at her.

And the pain in his face turned into anger.

“You told her I abandoned her.””

Denise said nothing.

“You told my daughter I didn’t want her.””

Vanessa looked between them.

“You knew he was looking for me?””

Denise opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was enough.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“All this time?””

David looked at her.

“I wrote letters.””

Her voice broke.

“Letters?””

“Dozens.””

Denise looked away.

“I never received them.””

David laughed bitterly.

“Because she destroyed them.””

The room exploded with silence.

Vanessa looked at Denise.

“Mom?””

Denise finally lost her calm.

“You don’t understand!””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I understand everything now.””

David stepped closer.

“I never stopped loving you.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

And for the first time since I had known her…

She cried like someone who had been holding pain for too long.

Marcus looked at Denise.

“Did you know about the accident?””

Denise’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

My heart dropped.

“What accident?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at my father.

“Dad.””

Marcus stared at Denise.

“The night your mother died.””

The room went cold.

David’s expression darkened.

“You told him?””

Marcus whispered:

“Your mother’s car wasn’t supposed to be on that road.””

I felt my breath disappear.

“What are you saying?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother changed her route after receiving a message.””

My hands started shaking.

“What message?””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

Then at Denise.

“A message warning her to stop looking into the truth.””

The door behind us slowly closed.

May you like

And Denise whispered one sentence.

“She should have listened.””
