Chapter 109 - The Architect’s Downfall

Arthur Sterling banged his fist against the reinforced ballistic glass of the control booth, his face purple with rage. "Useless! A defective genome! Both of you are trash!"

He turned frantically toward the secondary console, slamming his palm down on a red emergency ignition pad. "If I cannot control Philadelphia, I will cleanse it! Thermal containment protocol activated. This entire facility will incinerate in three minutes!"

A mechanical countdown began echoing through the bunker: **[FACILITY PURGE INITIATED. DETONATION IN 180 SECONDS.]**

Naomi held Vanessa steady, resting her against the ruined server bank. "Can you walk?"

Vanessa nodded, wiping her face, her eyes fierce with a new, terrifying clarity. "I can run. But Naomi... don't let him leave."

Naomi turned toward the glass booth. Arthur was already entering an escape hatch at the rear of the enclosure, clutching the master hard drive containing the complete Apex database.

Naomi sprinted forward. Drawing her sidearm, she aimed not at the ballistic glass, which would deflect conventional rounds, but at the hydraulic hinges holding the booth’s reinforced maintenance panel above the door. Three heavy armor-piercing rounds shattered the pressurized pistons, causing the overhead steel hatch to crash downward, pinning Arthur’s leg beneath tons of solid iron.

A horrific scream tore from Arthur's throat as he fell backward, dropping the master drive across the grating.

Naomi stepped through the shattered entrance, her boots heavy on the steel floor. She stood over the man who had authored her nightmares, looking down at him with eyes as cold as deep space.

"Please... Naomi!" Arthur begged, clawing desperately at the floor. "I created you! You owe your strength to me! Without the project, you were nothing—just a street urchin destined to die in the gutter!"

Naomi picked up the master hard drive. She plugged her tactical slate into its external port, uploading a worm virus directly into the core directory, corrupting the code beyond recovery.

"I was a human being before you stole me," Naomi said quietly. "And I am a human being now."

May you like

She reached down, pulling Arthur free just enough to drag him out into the corridor as the countdown hit thirty seconds.
