Chapter 22 - Shadows of the Iron Guard

The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the cold hiss of vaporizing nitrogen escaping the server vault.

"Vanessa knew?" Ethan’s voice was hollow, his aristocratic pride cracking to reveal raw fury. "She was part of this?"

"Vanessa was the distraction," Naomi said, checking the magazine of her tactical pistol before racking the slide with a crisp, lethal snap. "Her father’s bank underwrote the shell companies Marcus Cole uses to move illegal armaments through the Port of Newark. Vanessa thought she was just publicly humiliating a servant to force your hand into a marriage contract. She didn't realize she was the diversionary flare for a state-level extraction."

Clara stirred on the rug, her eyelids fluttering against the dim amber lights of the study. "Ethan...?" she whispered, her lips pale. "There were... men in black jackets... at the train station..."

"Shh, Clara, I'm here. You're safe," Ethan said, kissing her forehead. He looked up at Naomi, his eyes desperate. "Where do we go? The estate has forty rooms, but every window is glass. If Cole has a strike team—"

"The wine cellar," Naomi said immediately. "The subterranean level dates back to 1912. Reinforced granite foundation, three feet of masonry, no external wireless relays. It renders thermal imaging useless from outside."

"And then?" Ethan asked.

"Then I eliminate them," Naomi answered plainly.

She walked to the shattered French doors leading to the east balcony. The estate was pitch black; the auxiliary generators had been cut from the sub-station down the ridge. Rain began to patter against the slate shingles outside, growing into a steady, torrential downpour that blurred the expansive manicured lawns.

Through the sheet of rain, three small infrared beams sliced across the terrace lawn.

"Iron Guard mercenaries," Naomi whispered, watching the movement patterns. "Ex-Spetsnaz and rogue PMCs. They advance in staggered wedges of three. Suppressed carbines, night-vision optics, ceramic body armor. They aren't here to negotiate. They're here to sanitize the site."

"They want Clara," Ethan said, standing tall, his hand finding a spare Colt .45 from the study drawer.

"They want you both," Naomi countered, turning to face him. "With you dead, Whitmore Industries defaults to the Sterling-controlled consortium. Marcus Cole gets the kinetic weapons patents, and Vanessa’s family launders the profits through Geneva. It’s clean, brutal, and entirely legal on paper."

Naomi moved to Clara, lifting the unconscious girl effortlessly into her arms, shifting the weight to her uninjured shoulder. "Ethan, take point to the service stairs. Stay low. If you see light, duck. If you hear footsteps, do not speak. Do not fire unless I am down."

"And if you go down?" Ethan asked, watching the quiet, lethal grace of the woman he had only ever seen carrying silver trays and folding table linens.

Naomi met his gaze with eyes that possessed the chilling clarity of deep winter ice. "I don't go down, Mr. Whitmore."

They slipped into the narrow servant corridor concealed behind the paneled wood of the study. Here, away from the vaulted grandiosity of the manor, the air smelled of floor wax, old linoleum, and stale coffee—the invisible world of the workers who kept the Whitmore estate running. Naomi knew every floorboard that creaked, every loose latch, every blind spot in the architectural layout.

Halfway down the spiral stone staircase leading to the cellars, a soft click resonated from the bottom landing.

A shadow moved against the bare stone wall. The telltale silhouette of a mercenary carrying a compact assault rifle.

Naomi didn't hesitate. She placed Clara gently against the inner wall, whispered a single command to Ethan—"Stay"—and stepped into the darkness like water flowing through cracked glass.
