Chapter 112 - Midnight Transit

They abandoned Whitmore House through the drainage flume beneath the old stables—a Victorian aqueduct Naomi had scouted during her first week of employment as a domestic servant. Water swirled around their knees, icy and foul, carrying the chemical stink of fire-suppressant foam from the burning mansion above.

When they emerged half a mile away behind an abandoned freight depot along the Schuylkill River, Naomi retrieved a dust-covered sedan parked beneath a rusted overhang. It was an unassuming ten-year-old vehicle, registered under a phantom identity, but under the hood rested a modified high-output engine and encrypted satellite comms wired beneath the glove compartment.

Vanessa collapsed into the passenger seat, shivering violently as the heater roared to life. Naomi reached into the trunk, tossing a dry wool sweater, combat trousers, and a pair of tactical boots into the heiress’s lap.

"Change," Naomi ordered, keeping her eyes on the rearview mirror as she steered the sedan into the rain-slicked side streets of North Philadelphia. "Leave the dress. It contains RFID threads woven into the silk—standard Sterling tracking protocol. I should have stripped it off you hours ago."

Vanessa hesitated, then quickly stripped off the designer evening dress that had cost thirty thousand dollars, shivering in the unheated car before pulling on the scratchy, oversized wool. "You knew about the tracking threads?"

"I knew your father designed the Sterling autumn line with military-grade passive transponders four years ago," Naomi said, her fingers dancing across a decrypted dashboard screen. "The Directorate doesn't just sell weapons to defense contractors; they sell surveillance disguised as haute couture to three hundred of the wealthiest families in the Western Hemisphere."

The radio scanner on the dashboard crackled. Emergency dispatch across three states was in absolute disarray.

*“All units, Sector 1 through 6, New York Command is offline... repeat, Empire State relay is dark... reports of atmospheric EMP detonating at sub-orbital ceiling... catastrophic grid collapse in lower Manhattan...”*

Naomi tapped the screen, bringing up a localized spectrum analyzer. The green flare hadn't been an explosive weapon. It was an ionization burst—a carrier wave designed to blind commercial radar and civilian communication networks while opening a high-bandwidth military conduit over the Eastern Seaboard.

"Unit 09," the dead analog frequency hummed again through the car's hidden speakers, bypassing the radio tuner completely. The British aristocratic voice was pristine, undisturbed by the atmospheric static. "You are currently traveling north on Interstate 95 at eighty-two miles per hour. Your companion’s heart rate is elevated at one hundred and forty beats per minute. How delightfully predictable."

Naomi reached for the frequency disruptor beneath the steering column, but the voice chuckled softly.

"Do not bother severing the line, child. If I wanted you obliterated, the drone currently hovering at sixty thousand feet above Trenton would have already deployed a kinetic harpoon through your engine block. We do not want you dead, Naomi. We want you to see what Arthur was keeping locked in the vaults of Manhattan."
