Chapter 16 - The Gala Aftermath

Three days had passed since the blood and rain at the gates of Whitmore Estate.
The Rhode Island news networks had erupted with wall-to-wall coverage of Judge Sterling’s disgraced arrest, the seizure of millions in illicit offshore accounts, and the public revoking of his federal credentials. Vanessa Sterling had fled the state in disgrace, socially ruined and ostracized by every circle that once catered to her every whim.
Inside Whitmore House, the broken gates had been replaced with reinforced titanium alloy, the security perimeter overhauled by a team of covert defense contractors personally vetted by Ethan.
In the master suite’s private sitting room, Naomi stood before a full-length mirror.
She wore an emerald-green silk evening gown with an asymmetrical neckline that draped elegantly over her athletic frame. Her dark hair was styled into an intricate, sweeping updo, revealing the elegant curve of her neck and the faint, faded scar behind her left collarbone—a relic of her past that the dress neither flaunted nor hid.
The door opened softly, and Ethan stepped into the room. He was dressed in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, looking every inch the billionaire scion, but the sharpness in his eyes showed he was no longer just an heir playing corporate games.
He stopped in his tracks, staring at Naomi with undisguised breathlessness.
"You look... extraordinary," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a quiet reverie.
A faint blush colored Naomi’s cheeks, though she disguised it with a wry smile. "It feels strange wearing something that doesn't have hidden knife sheaths or ceramic trauma plates."
"Don't worry," Ethan murmured, stepping closer until he was standing just behind her, his reflection mingling with hers in the glass. "There's a lightweight polymer blade concealed in your clutch, and my cufflinks double as encrypted signal disruptors."
Naomi turned to face him, looking up into his hazel eyes. "Tonight is the Rhode Island Heritage Foundation Gala. The entire eastern elite will be there. Everyone knows about Sterling's arrest, and everyone knows you dismissed Vanessa. If you walk into that ballroom with me on your arm, Ethan, you are telling the world that the rumors are true."
"What rumors?" Ethan asked softly, taking her hands into his own.
"That the billionaire heir of Whitmore Enterprises chose an orphaned ex-operative over high-society royalty," she answered, her heart beating with an unfamiliar, tender vulnerability. "They will scrutinize you. They will dig into your family's records. They will try to find leverage."
Ethan smiled—a slow, confident, and deeply protective smile. "Let them dig. My grandfather built this empire so that no man, no board of directors, and no syndicate could ever tell a Whitmore who he could love or protect."
His fingers tightened around hers, his gaze unwavering. "You spent eight years in the dark, Naomi. You spent eight years fighting for people who never knew your name, bleeding in shadows so others could live in peace. Tonight, you walk into the light. Beside me."
Naomi looked at their joined hands, feeling the last remaining knot of solitude inside her chest untie. She took a slow, steady breath and nodded.
"Beside you," she agreed softly.
As they walked down the grand stairs, Mrs. Gable and the entire household staff stood in the lower hall, dressed in their finest uniforms. When Naomi appeared at Ethan's side, Mrs. Gable beamed with unmistakable pride, dipping into a respectful, affectionate curtsy.
"Have a wonderful evening, Miss Reyes," the older woman said warmly. "You make this house proud."

For the first time in her life, Naomi didn't feel like a weapon waiting to be aimed. She felt like someone coming home.
