Chapter 121 - The Abyssal Sprint

The G-force crushed Naomi back into the contoured foam of the pilot couch like an invisible slab of lead. Her vision narrowed to a vibrating tunnel of crimson and slate gray as the inertia dampeners shrieked against the violent physics of their departure. Beneath them, the magnetic levitation runners howled against the superconducting rails, hurling Car 02 through the absolute void of the subterranean evacuated transit tube at velocities that rendered human perception entirely useless.

Beside her, Julian Whitmore’s jaw was clamped shut so hard the tendons in his neck looked like taut wire ropes. He fought the overwhelming acceleration, his breath rattling in his throat as the cabin telemetry blinked rapidly from Mach 2 to Mach 3.8.

"Naomi..." Julian managed to squeeze past his teeth, his hand clawing across the center console toward the manual decoupling switch. "The... the transmission. Vance... seismic charges..."

"Don't touch it," Naomi ordered, her voice clipped, cold, and entirely stripped of panic. Her body was already adjusting, her pulse deliberately regulated down to fifty-two beats per minute through sheer autonomic conditioning. "If you trip the manual decoupler at three thousand miles per hour inside a hard vacuum, the magnetic field will collapse instantly. The kinetic friction alone will vaporize this pod against the ceramic tunnel walls in less than six milliseconds."

Her gloved fingers darted across the glowing amber interface of the pilot console. Arthur Sterling’s terrified face had vanished into static, but the encrypted telemetry packet that arrived with his dying transmission remained embedded in the transit buffer. She cracked the diagnostic subroutines with ruthless speed, using her old Directorate clearance codes.

The news was worse than Arthur had gasped.

The trans-Atlantic hyper-tunnel was an engineering marvel of the Apex Council—a sealed subterranean artery dug beneath the tectonic plates of the Atlantic floor. But seven hundred miles east, right at the jagged spine of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the North American and Eurasian plates met, a series of nuclear-yield demolition charges had been anchored to the tube's outer structural rings.

"He didn't just rig the junction," Naomi murmured, her eyes scanning the scrolling seismic schematics. "Vance has synchronized the charges with Car 01's passage. He’s running four minutes ahead of us. The moment Car 01 clears the Mid-Atlantic tectonic fracture, the charges blow behind him. The ocean trench will cave in. Hundreds of millions of tons of seawater under twenty thousand pounds per square inch of hydrostatic pressure will flood the vacuum tube directly into our faces."

"Can we reverse thrust?" Julian asked, wiping blood from his nose where the acceleration had burst a capillary.

"Not in time. We'd still carry enough momentum to hit the shockwave head-on," Naomi replied, her gaze fixed on the digital countdown clock flashing on the heads-up display.

*TIME TO DETONATION: 03 MINUTES, 42 SECONDS.*

"Then what are we doing?"

May you like

Naomi’s lips hardened into a thin, predatory line—the exact expression she had worn years ago before stepping onto the execution floors of the Old Directorate. "We don't brake. We accelerate."
