Chapter 14 - Night Perimeter

The rain deepened into a relentless deluge as Naomi slipped out through the concealed garden doors on the west wing. The thick rhododendron bushes and manicured boxwood hedges of Whitmore Estate provided ample concealment for an operative who moved like a shadow.

Water dripped from her dark hair, plastering strands against her pale, angular cheekbones. Her senses were dialed to maximum acuity; she could hear the rhythmic crunch of gravel, the wet squelch of combat boots in the mud, and the soft hiss of pressurized pneumatic radio headsets.

"Team One, secure the eastern terrace," a voice with a harsh European accent crackled through an earpiece Naomi had swiped from a disabled camera hub. "Team Two, take the rear service entrance. Target is Naomi Reyes, priority alpha. Capture if possible, terminate if compromised. All estate staff are secondary targets—leave no loose ends."

Naomi’s jaw tightened. They were planning a massacre of innocent people—Mrs. Gable, the kitchen girls, the young gardeners.

Not on her watch.

She shifted through the rain, dropping behind a massive marble urn near the conservatory walkway. Two Vanguard mercenaries moved in tight formation along the flagstone path, their carbines held at the low-ready position.

Naomi waited until their shadows crossed the stone steps.

In a blur of lethal motion, she exploded from the darkness. Her left hand struck the first mercenary’s throat in an open-palm strike that shattered his larynx before he could utter a sound. With her right hand, she seized his carbine barrel, redirecting it downward as his finger spasmed on the trigger, firing two muffled rounds harmlessly into the wet mulch.

The second mercenary spun to raise his weapon, but Naomi was already inside his guard. She grabbed his wrist, twisting it outward with an agonizing snap, while simultaneously driving her knee into his solar plexus. Before he could fall, she drove his head into the stone pillar with a sickening crunch. Both men hit the ground, unconscious and neutralized, within four seconds.

Up on the second-story balcony, Ethan watched through the scope of his rifle. His heart hammered against his ribs—not with terror, but with awe.

He had heard stories of elite operatives, had read classified dossiers on the lethal efficiency of specialized black-ops units, but seeing Naomi in motion was like watching a master artist paint in violence. There was no hesitation, no wasted breath. She was absolute perfection in combat.

Suddenly, a red laser sight painted Ethan’s chest.

"Ethan, down!" Naomi’s voice crackled through his personal radio.

Ethan threw himself backward onto the wet stone balcony just as a high-caliber sniper round tore through the ornate marble balustrade, showering him in sharp stone fragments.

Down in the courtyard, Judge Sterling stood near his SUV, pale and shaking as the sound of suppressed gunfire began to echo through the rain. "What is happening?!" he shrieked at the mercenary commander. "You told me she was cornered! Why aren't they breaking in?!"

"Shut up, you fool," the commander snarled, raising a submachine gun. "The woman isn't trapped in there. She's hunting us."

From the shadows of the estate's grand portico, Naomi stepped into the courtyard lights. Her weapons were lowered at her sides, the rain washing the mud from her boots. Her gaze locked onto Judge Sterling, and for the first time in his life, the arrogant, all-powerful judge saw true death looking back at him.

"Sterling," Naomi said, her voice cutting through the pounding rain like a blade. "Your daughter kicked my tray because she thought I was nobody. You brought mercenaries to this house because you thought I was helpless. Now, let me show you what happens when you corner a phantom."
