Chapter 91 - The Mirror in the Mist

The detonation was not a lethal blast of shrapnel, but a concussive concussion wave engineered for tactical disruption.

A deafening crack tore through the heavy river fog, throwing Naomi backward across the churned mud. The flash-bang frequency overloaded her retinas with blinding white light, while the acoustic shock rattled through her inner ear, threatening to shatter her equilibrium. Yet her combat conditioning—forged over brutal years in the subterranean chambers of Project Nine—forced her muscles to adapt before her conscious mind could process the pain.

She rolled as she hit the earth, digging her fingers into the sodden bank to arrest her momentum. Through the fading burn in her vision, she saw the silhouette of Julian Sterling tumbling toward the water’s edge.

From the stealth craft, the woman who wore Naomi’s face moved with terrifying precision. She leaped from the gunwale, clearing ten feet of churning river without a splash, landing lightly on the mud in polished domestic shoes. Her posture was straight, spine rigid, hands tucked in the classic resting pose of an estate servant—the exact resting posture Naomi had maintained for three years inside Whitmore House.

"You let yourself grow dull, Naomi," the double said softly, her voice carrying the exact resonance, tone, and inflection of Naomi's own vocal cords. "Serving wine. Ironing cuffs. Did you think wiping dust from antique mirrors would wash away the blood in your marrow?"

Julian groaned, reaching up from the bank, his fingers clawing at the woman's skirt. "Kill her... take the ledger and finish her!"

The woman didn't spare Julian a glance. With a casual flick of her heel—a strike executed with the exact mechanical lever-action Naomi had used against Vanessa Sterling months ago—she struck Julian in the temple. The young heir collapsed into the silt, unconscious.

Naomi sprang to her feet, water dripping from her tactical vest, her breath steady despite the ringing in her ears. "Who are you?"

"I am Unit Nine-Bravo. The version they perfected after you broke protocol," the woman replied, bending down to retrieve the heavy brass-bound Apex Ledger with one smooth sweep. "Father always said you were his favorite failure. But a failure nonetheless."

With the ledger tucked beneath her arm, Nine-Bravo backed toward the idling vessel. Naomi lunged forward, closing the ten-yard gap in two explosive strides, but Bravo did not panic. She drew a suppressed tactical pistol from beneath her gray apron, firing two armor-piercing rounds directly into the ground between Naomi’s boots, showering her with river stones.

By the time Naomi adjusted her angle, Bravo was airborne, catching the stern rail of the stealth boat. The twin turbine engines roared into life, tearing into the dark waters of the Schuylkill before Naomi could clear the bank.
