Chapter 97 - The Sterling Legacy Rekindled

Vanessa stared at Naomi through the driving rain. For three seconds, the only sound was the howling wind and the distant clanging of shipping containers down the industrial coast.

"She's a rogue asset, Miss Sterling," the contractor captain murmured, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Protocol says we eliminate her and secure the artifact."

Vanessa looked from Naomi’s bloodstained uniform to the scorched brass ledger in her hands. She remembered the ball—the moment her silver heel had been stopped mid-air by a maid whose expression had never even flickered. She remembered the realization that the people who served them were not invisible furniture, but living beings who could crush them if they chose.

"Stand down," Vanessa ordered softly.

The captain blinked. "Ma'am?"

"I said stand down, Reynolds!" Vanessa’s voice cut with sharp authority. She stepped past the rifles, walking directly up to Naomi. Her eyes took in the cuts on Naomi's face, the identical features she had briefly glimpsed in the smoke when the second woman dove into the river.

"That woman... she had your face," Vanessa breathed, her aristocratic mask cracking to reveal raw shock.

"There are more of us," Naomi replied, tucking the ledger beneath her arm. "And their target isn't just Julian or the Apex Council. Their target is every family that ever funded the Red Chamber. Including the Sterlings. Including the Whitmores."

Vanessa swallowed hard. "Terminal 4 is where Julian leased three freight barges last week. He claimed they were shipping agricultural machinery to South America."

"They're not shipping machinery," Naomi said, walking toward the lead SUV. "They're shipping the deployment hubs. If that secondary signal fires, every sleeper receives their target dossier within five minutes."

Vanessa turned to her men. "Mount up. We're going to Terminal 4."
