Chapter 53 - The Bloodline Mandate

Naomi kept the carbine leveled dead at the center of the officer’s forehead. "Name and rank. Give me a reason not to put two rounds through your throat right now."
The gray-haired officer didn't blink. He stopped five paces away, completely unfazed by the barrel pointed at his face. He bowed his head slightly—not toward Naomi, and not toward Ethan, but toward the terrified young girl clinging to Ethan’s arm.
"I am Captain Douglas Mercer," the man said, his voice deep and measured. "Commanding officer of the Directorate's Sovereign Naval Division. And this vessel belongs to her."
He gestured toward Clara.
Around the hangar, every single commando snapped their weapons to their chests, dropped to one knee on the slick metal decking, and bowed their heads in unison.
Ethan stepped forward, shielding his sister with his arm. "What kind of sick game are you playing, Mercer? My sister is eighteen years old. She knows nothing about your organization."
"She knows nothing because your father chose to keep her blind, Mr. Whitmore," Mercer replied, raising his eyes. "Julian Whitmore did not construct the Directorate to serve the petty oligarchs of the Apex Council. He built it as an iron cage to contain them. But when Marcus and his faction attempted to seize the network for their own profit, your father instituted the Sovereign Protocol."
Mercer produced a biometric datapad and held it out with both hands, offering it like a ceremonial blade.
"The Directorate does not obey money, Mr. Whitmore. It obeys genetic authority. Julian hardcoded his ultimate overrides into Clara’s mitochondrial DNA before she was even born. Marcus thought he could steal the keys by burning down the Philadelphia facilities and hunting you. He failed."
Clara stared at the glowing tablet in Mercer’s hands. On the glass screen, her face was mapped with thousands of biometric vector points, glowing with unassailable green authorization codes.
"My father..." Clara whispered, her voice shaking violently. "He made me... a weapon?"
"No, Miss Whitmore," Mercer said softly. "He made you the trigger. And as long as you live, the Apex Council cannot launch a single missile, activate a single sleeper cell, or touch a single dollar of the Whitmore estate without your direct authorization."
Naomi lowered her rifle an inch, her eyes narrowing as she swept the hangar. "If she's the Supreme Controller, why did the transmitter in the pod order me to execute Ethan?"

Mercer’s expression hardened, a grim shadow passing over his weathered features. "Because the Apex Council has not yet surrendered the primary bridge of this vessel. We are in the middle of a mutiny."
