Chapter 33 - The Vault Beneath the Stables

They didn't head for the estate's main gate, which was already blocked by tactical barricades, but toward the ancient carriage stables at the far eastern edge of Whitmore Manor.
Ethan limped heavily, his ankle twisted during the scramble across the terrace, but Naomi hoisted his weight effortlessly onto her shoulder. She didn't complain. She didn't slow. Every stride she took was measured, scanning the tree line, calculating firing lanes and windage.
"Why the stables?" Ethan panted, grimacing in pain as they slipped through the splintered timber doors of the old barn. "There are no cars here. Only historic carriages and tack rooms."
"Your father wasn't just a philanthropist, Ethan," Naomi said quietly, kicking aside bales of rotting hay in the far stall. Beneath the straw lay a heavy cast-iron trapdoor sealed with an industrial biometric lock. "Julian Whitmore knew who I was the day he hired me as an undocumented maid. He knew the Division would come eventually."
Ethan froze, the damp cold of the barn sinking into his bones. "My father... knew?"
"He was the architect of the Philadelphia safehouse," Naomi revealed, pressing her thumb firmly against the scarred scanner of the trapdoor. The mechanism whirred, cycling through red, amber, and finally flashing green. "He hid me in plain sight under the guise of an invisible servant. The maid no one looked twice at. He knew Vanessa Sterling's family was hunting the core, and he knew the Division was hunting me. He gave me a refuge, and in exchange, I swore to keep his bloodline alive."
She hauled the heavy iron door open, revealing a concrete staircase descending into a dry, electrified subterranean tunnel that smelled of ozone and gun grease.
"Clara was taken because Vanessa found out Julian's secret," Naomi continued, guiding Ethan down the stairs and pulling the heavy hatch shut above them. The locking bolts slammed into place with the finality of a bank vault. "Vanessa’s father wants the neural drive to corner the global weapons market. But Vanessa... Vanessa took Clara because of you. She wanted to break your spirit before she executed you."
Ethan slumped against the cold concrete wall of the bunker, burying his face in his hands. "I introduced them. I brought Vanessa into this house. Clara begged me not to trust the Sterlings... and I told her she was being paranoid."

Naomi walked over to a steel workbench mounted against the tunnel wall, flipping a breaker switch. Overhead fluorescent lights flickered to life, illuminating rows of encrypted communication rigs, tactical flight suits, and a matte-black Aston Martin DB9 retrofitted with reinforced armor plating and run-flat tires.
"Self-pity won't save her, Ethan," Naomi said, her tone sharp and unyielding. "You have twenty-two hours before the London summit begins. We have six hours of driving and a covert channel across the English Channel. Pick up a rifle, or get out of my way."
