Chapter 55 - Divided Loyalties

Ethan walked slowly toward the desk, his hand trembling as he reached for the envelope. Naomi positioned herself near the heavy door, her eyes scanning the corridor outside while her ears remained tuned to the muffled sound of distant gunfire echoing through the sub's ventilation shafts.

"They're advancing through the torpedo bays," Naomi reported, adjusting her grip on the carbine. "Five minutes, maybe less, before Kael’s breach teams reach this bulkhead."

"Read it, Ethan," Clara whispered, clinging to his sleeve.

Ethan tore open the parchment. His father’s bold, angular handwriting stared back at him.

*Ethan,*

*If you are reading this, the illusion of our family has burned to ash, and the world has shown you its true, predatory face. I do not ask for your forgiveness for the lies I told, nor for the armor I placed around your sister. The men I partnered with to build this empire were monsters. When I realized they could not be reformed, I built the cage.*

*Naomi—Operative 09—was never your servant. She was the finest, most resilient soul the Philadelphia program ever broke, and the only one who preserved her humanity beneath the conditioning. I placed her at your side because I knew that when the end came, she would choose you over the code.*

*To save Clara, you must lock the Directorate into self-purge mode. But understand this: purging the network will vent the submarine's ballast tanks. The ship will dive into the Romanche Trench. You will have three minutes to reach the emergency escape module in the aft hangar before the pressure implodes the hull.*

*Choose quickly, my son. The world cannot survive the monsters I created.*

Ethan looked up, his jaw set, his eyes burning with grief and fury. "The console, Clara. We have to wipe it all."

Before Clara could step forward, the reinforced glass window overlooking the corridor shattered in an explosion of sparks and gunfire.

"Down!" Naomi roared, tackling Clara and Ethan to the floor just as a volley of armor-piercing rounds shredded Julian’s mahogany desk, pulverizing the family photograph into paper dust.

Mercer’s two guards at the door were cut down instantly. Standing in the breached corridor was a towering figure clad in an advanced exoskeleton suit, his face covered by a matte-black ballistic mask painted with the white skull of Generation Ten.
