Chapter 122 - The Fracture at 1,000 Fathoms

Julian stared at her as if she had lost her mind. "Accelerate? You just said the tunnel is going to collapse!"

"The tunnel will collapse from above," Naomi said, her fingers blurring across the engineering override protocols. "The charges are shaped charges, seated on the benthic crest to drive the seabed downward like a guillotine. The structural engineers who designed this system built an emergency atmospheric bleed gate three miles before the Mid-Atlantic fault line—a venting manifold meant to dump air pressure during tunnel maintenance."

She bypassed the automated safety interlocks, inputting a brute-force root command: *DIRECTIVE ZERO: SYSTEM OVERCHARGE.*

The pod groaned. The twin fusion-battery manifolds in the rear of Car 02 flared with white-hot luminescence. The digital speedometer leaped past 3,400 mph. The pod rattled with bone-jarring violence as the vacuum seals around the hull began to scream under the thermal stress of atmospheric friction against the stray gas particles in the tube.

"If we hit the fracture zone after the blast, the hydraulic shockwave will pulverize us into paste," Naomi explained calmly, watching the distance counter drop by hundreds of miles with every ragged breath they took. "Our only chance is to reach the pressure manifold before the ocean floor finishes collapsing. We blow the emergency access hatch outward into the maintenance dry-dock beneath the ocean floor."

"And if the dry-dock is already compromised?"

"Then we drown in absolute darkness five miles beneath the surface," Naomi said without flinching. "Prepare the kinetic dampening harnesses. Lock your helmet."

She slammed down the heavy glass visors of their flight suits. An instant later, the cockpit screens flashed a violent, blinding violet.

Seven hundred miles beneath the rolling swells of the storm-swept North Atlantic, the seismic charges detonated.

Through the forward thermal optics of Car 02, Naomi saw the impossible. The eternal blackness of the transit tube ahead suddenly bowed, fractured, and blossomed into a horrific, churning wall of white-hot oceanic pressure. The titanium-carbide rings of the tube buckled like tin cans under the heel of a titan.

Millions of tons of freezing seawater, compressed by the immense weight of the ocean, came roaring into the vacuum tube at supersonic speed, creating a hydraulic ram capable of splintering battleships into scrap.

And Car 02 was screaming directly into its teeth.
