Chapter 76 - The Cryo-Vault of the Discarded

The subterranean complex was cold, but preserved in a dry, sterile vacuum that smelled of ozone and long-dead dreams. As they navigated deeper into the lower levels, the emergency lights revealed dozens of glass-fronted chambers lined along the basalt walls.
Inside the frost-covered glass, suspended in liquid stasis, were figures. Men and women, young and frozen in time, wearing identical gray athletic suits.
Ethan stopped, his eyes wide in horror. "These are... these are candidates. From the early batches."
"Generation Seven and Eight," Naomi said softly, her cold exterior cracking for a fraction of a second as she gazed at a young woman whose face looked hauntingly similar to her own from ten years ago. "The failures. The ones whose neural implants rejected the conditioning. The Sterlings kept them on ice like defective machinery, waiting for a firmware update."
"My family did this," Ethan murmured, his voice heavy with guilt. "Julian and Vanessa's father."
"You didn't build this place, Ethan. But we are going to bury it," she said.
A low vibration rattled the ceiling. Dust rained down from the rock. The high-explosive breaching charges had just been detonated at the upper blast door. Vanessa’s strike team had broken through.
Naomi moved to the central control console in the vault’s amphitheater. An amber terminal hummed to life as she laid her hand on the mainframe interface. A digital prompt flashed onto the screen:
*SUBJECT DESIGNATION: NINE-ZERO-FOUR (NAOMI). ACCESS GRANTED. OVERRIDE PROTOCOL INITIATED.*
"There is an auxiliary self-destruct cycle," Naomi noted, reading the green lines of legacy code flashing across the monitor. "Designed to flood the facility with volatile coolant if the site was ever compromised by external forces. It will collapse the shelf into the ocean."
"Then we activate it and leave through the drainage tunnels," Ethan urged.

"There's only one problem," Naomi replied, her gaze fixed on the final lines of the command sequence. "The primary ignition requires an active manual confirmation from inside the sub-level core. Someone has to hold the primary circuit open."
