Chapter 18 - The Steel Beneath the Silk

A collective gasp of shock and confusion erupted from the five hundred wealthy guests as the grand ballroom was plunged into pitch-black darkness.

Secondary emergency red floodlights flickered to life along the baseboards, casting ominous, bloody shadows across the silk gowns and tuxedoed patrons. Panic surged as screaming began near the rear exits.

"Stay with Arthur," Naomi whispered to Ethan, preparing to disengage.

"Not a chance," Ethan replied instantly, grabbing her hand. He slipped his cufflinks off, twisting the metal tops until a sharp blue LED ignited. "I'm deploying the jamming signal now. Their comms are dead. We fight together, Naomi."

A harsh gunshot cracked through the high ceiling, sending plaster raining down onto the dance floor. The crowd shrieked in terror, stampeding toward the main foyer doors, crushing each other in a desperate bid to escape.

Through the chaos, four figures in tactical gray combat gear moved toward Ethan and Naomi with ruthless precision, silencers attached to their pistols.

"Vanguard point team!" Naomi warned.

Before the first operative could raise his weapon, Naomi threw her green silk clutch with pinpoint accuracy, striking the man directly in the eye socket. As he flinched, she closed the distance in two explosive strides. Despite the restricting hem of her evening gown, she ripped the side slit upward with a sharp tear, freeing her legs.

She pivoted on her heel, executing a brutal roundhouse kick that connected with the operative's temple, sending his heavy tactical helmet flying. She caught his falling suppressed pistol out of the air before it touched the ground.

*Thwack! Thwack!*

Two suppressed rounds punched into the chest armor of the second operative advancing on Ethan. The man staggered backward, gasping for breath as the ceramic trauma plates absorbed the impact.

Ethan didn't wait. He closed in, using his larger frame to drive the stunned operative into a marble pillar, stripping the tactical knife from the man’s vest and driving the pommel brutally into his temple, dropping him like a stone.

"Not bad for an aristocrat!" Naomi shouted over the din of screaming guests.

"I told you my grandfather was thorough!" Ethan fired back, stepping shoulder-to-shoulder with her as the red emergency lights bathed them in crimson.

Ahead of them, Marcus Cole stood near the shattered glass doors of the terrace. The autumn wind howled into the ballroom, whipping the velvet curtains like funeral shrouds.

Cole didn't draw a weapon. He stood tall, hands clasped behind his back, a grotesque, reconstructed smile stretching across his scarred face.

"Eight years, Naomi," Cole's voice was raspy, metallic, vibrating through an artificial vocal cord. "Eight years I waited to see the legendary Agent Reyes. And here you are, dressed like a debutante, playing bodyguard to a spoiled billionaire."

"You should have stayed in the fire in Philadelphia, Marcus," Naomi said, her voice dropping into a lethal, low hum that cut through the wind. "Because this time, I won't leave your body behind to rot."

Cole chuckled, a dry, horrific clicking sound. "You think this was about revenge, Naomi? You think I crossed three continents just to settle an old grudge with my best student?"

May you like

He tilted his head toward Ethan. "The Vanguard syndicate doesn't care about you, girl. We care about the Whitmore global defense accounts. Sterling was a distraction. This gala was a cage. And you... you were merely the bait that brought Ethan Whitmore away from his fortified estate."
