Chapter 111 - The Emerald Horizon

The emerald flare that tore across the northern sky did not fade like ordinary ordnance; it lingered, a phosphorescent scar carved into the lower clouds above New York. Standing on the ruined lawn of Whitmore House, Naomi felt the vibration deep within the marrow of her bones before the sonic boom reached them—a delayed, subterranean rumble that cracked the wet flagstones beneath her boots.

Vanessa staggered, clutching Naomi’s tactical vest for balance. The heiress’s fingers were trembling, coated in soot, blood, and cold rain. "What is that?" Vanessa whispered, her voice barely carrying over the chorus of Philadelphia emergency sirens screaming beyond the outer gates. "Naomi... what did he mean by Sector Four?"

On the ground, Arthur Sterling continued to chuckle, spitting dark red bile onto the freshly cut grass. The cuffs around his wrists rattled as his shoulders shook with unhinged mirth. "You spent ten years running from ghosts, Naomi," Arthur wheezed, his pale eyes reflecting the unnatural green glow on the horizon. "Did you truly believe an empire that bio-engineered your bones, your nervous system, your entire bloodline, would leave its governance to a single branch office in Pennsylvania? I was the ledger-keeper. The banker. But the Grand Directorate... they never reside where the weapons are forged."

Naomi did not waste words. In a singular, fluid motion, she drew her sidearm, shifted her grip, and brought the reinforced butt of the pistol down against the nerve cluster on the side of Arthur’s neck. His laughter ceased instantly, his head falling limp against the damp earth.

"He's unconscious, not dead," Naomi said, her voice dropping into the icy, monotone cadence of Unit 09. "The police will breach the lower gates in three minutes. We cannot be here when the Federal Bureau of Investigation or Homeland Security establishes a quarantine."

"My family's house—" Vanessa began, looking back at the smoking ruins of the conservatory, where centuries of Sterling wealth lay shattered among twisted steel and spent brass casings.

"Your family's house is an evidence locker now, Vanessa," Naomi said, cutting her off without cruelty, but with uncompromising clarity. "And within twelve hours, the Directorate’s cleanup operatives—people who make the mercenaries we just killed look like amateurs—will infiltrate whatever hospital Arthur is taken to. If you stay, you are leverage. If you come with me, you are a target. Choose."

Vanessa looked down at her ruined silver evening shoes, then up at the maid who had caught her kick in mid-air what felt like a lifetime ago. The woman in the gray uniform was gone, replaced by a ghost wrapped in Kevlar and wet cordite. "I'm coming," Vanessa said firmly. "Where do we go?"

May you like

"North," Naomi replied, staring at the fading green ribbon in the Manhattan sky. "Into the epicenter."
