Chapter 17 - Breached Silence

The grand ballroom of the Newport Ocean House was a kaleidoscope of diamonds, champagne flutes, and classical string quartets. Over five hundred members of New England’s most powerful families mingled beneath towering arched ceilings, exchanging pleasantries while calculating stock market movements.
When the double doors opened and Ethan Whitmore entered with Naomi Reyes on his arm, the music seemed to lose its rhythm.
Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through dry grass.
"Is that... the woman from the Sterling incident?"
"She looks like royalty... who is she?"
"They say she dismantled three armed men with her bare hands at the estate gates..."
"Ethan Whitmore hasn't brought a date to this gala in six years..."
Ethan ignored the murmurs, keeping his arm firmly around Naomi as they descended the sweeping marble staircase into the grand ballroom. Naomi moved with effortless grace, her chin held high, her eyes missing nothing. Behind her serene, aristocratic smile, her mind was cataloging every exit, every security guard, and every blind spot in the hall.
"Mr. Whitmore," an older gentleman with silver mutton chops and a tuxedo adorned with medals stepped forward—Arthur Vance, Margaret’s brother and a senior trustee of the foundation. "I see you brought the talk of the season."
"Arthur," Ethan greeted warmly, shaking his hand. "Allow me to introduce Miss Naomi Reyes. Naomi, Arthur Vance."
"A pleasure, Miss Reyes," Arthur said, bowing slightly over her hand. His eyes held a flicker of secret understanding. "My sister speaks very highly of your... exceptional talents."
"Director Vance is too generous," Naomi replied smoothly.
Suddenly, a disturbance rippled near the ballroom entrance.
A tall man in a dark naval uniform walked past the security checkpoint without showing a credential. The private guards at the door didn't stop him; in fact, they seemed frozen, their earpieces dead.
Naomi’s tactical radar screamed.
She looked across the glittering sea of wealthy patrons. The man in the naval uniform had short-cropped gray hair, a stiff, rigid posture, and a high-collared jacket that completely concealed his neck. As he turned his head, the chandelier light caught the side of his jaw—an unnatural, synthetic tightness beneath the skin, revealing surgical reconstruction.
Marcus Cole.
He wasn't hiding in Boston at Pier 44. The intel from Judge Sterling had been an intentional leak—a diversion to draw Margaret’s federal teams away from Newport while Cole infiltrated the gala itself.
Naomi’s fingers tightened on Ethan’s forearm. "Ethan. Look at the western terrace doors. Ten o'clock."
Ethan subtly shifted his gaze, his jaw tightening as he spotted the man. "Cole?"
"Yes," Naomi whispered, her pulse accelerating to combat speed. "He's here. And he didn't come alone."

As if on cue, the dazzling crystal chandeliers throughout the three-story ballroom flickered once, twice, and died.
