Chapter 39 - The Glass Cage

The interior of Platform Echo-Seven was an industrial labyrinth of corrugated steel, humming generators, and smell of heavy petroleum.

Naomi moved through the maintenance conduits with terrifying efficiency, clearing two security checkpoints without firing a single unsilenced round. Each takedown was clinical, silent, and brutal—leaving four Iron Guard sentries slumped unconscious or dead in the dark maintenance shafts.

Ethan followed in her slipstream, gripping the Sig Sauer with shaking hands, stepping over the fallen men, his eyes hardening with every breath he took. The pampering of high society was evaporating from his marrow, replaced by pure, desperate survival.

They reached the central operations floor, peering through a reinforced ventilation grate into the main staging hub.

In the center of the cavernous room, illuminated by harsh overhead halogen floodlights, stood a reinforced cylindrical glass containment cell.

Inside the cell, tied to a heavy steel chair, was Clara Whitmore.

Her evening gown from the gala was torn and stained with soot. Her face was bruised, her lip split, but her eyes burned with the stubborn, aristocratic defiance of the Whitmore family.

Standing outside the glass cell, holding a fine bone-china teacup, was Vanessa Sterling. She wore a tailored black coat over an immaculate designer suit, her platinum hair pristine despite the storm raging outside. Standing beside her was Marcus Sterling, a towering, gray-haired patriarch whose chest was lined with old military medals and whose cold eyes stared at Clara like a butcher appraising meat.

"You're wasting time, Clara," Vanessa’s voice echoed through the intercom, sweet and venomous. "Your brother is dead. The maid is dead. Your home is ashes. All you have to do is tell Father the encryption sequence Julian left in your music box, and we'll let you take a comfortable flight to Switzerland."

Clara lifted her chin, spitting blood onto the glass wall. "Go to hell, Vanessa. My brother will burn your empire down."

Vanessa sighed dramatically, setting her teacup on a control console. "Ethan was a weakling, darling. Just like your father. He couldn't even protect his own ballroom, let alone an empire."

Marcus Sterling checked his platinum watch. "Fifteen minutes until the helicopter arrives for London. If the girl doesn't yield, hook her to the neuro-probe. We extract the sequence directly, even if it leaves her brain dead."

Ethan’s breathing hitched in the air duct. His knuckles whitened around the gun grip. "Naomi..." he hissed, his voice trembling with sheer murderous intent. "Let me kill them."

"Not yet," Naomi warned in an icy whisper. "Look at the catwalks above."

Ethan looked up. Positioned on the high rafters were six elite snipers, their rifles trained squarely on the glass cell, and beneath Vanessa’s console lay a detonator box wired with high-explosive charges set around Clara's glass cage.

"It's a deadfall," Naomi said softly. "The moment we breach that floor, Vanessa hits the detonator and vaporizes Clara."
