Chapter 85 - The Fall of the Perimeter

Three thousand miles away, the peaceful autumn mist that usually blanketed the rolling hills of the Whitmore estate in Chester County, Pennsylvania, was shattered by the cold crack of silenced assault rifles.
Henderson, the venerable head butler who had served the Whitmore family for thirty-five years, dropped his silver tea tray onto the polished parquet floor of the grand foyer. The fine bone-china cups shattered into a hundred jagged fragments.
"Lady Whitmore! Stay in the safe room!" Henderson shouted, pulling an old service revolver from the hidden compartment beneath the front reception desk.
Outside, across the immaculate rose gardens where Naomi had so often weeded with quiet, methodical precision, half a dozen black-clad assault teams were advancing under the cover of flash-suppressed carbines. The private security guards Ethan had hired after the gala in Philadelphia had already been eliminated—their bodies lay motionless among the pruned boxwoods, taken out from long range by sniper fire before the alarms could even sound.
The front oak doors—carved from solid seventeenth-century timber—burst inward in an explosion of splinters and steel hinges.
Julian Sterling walked into the foyer, impeccably dressed in a charcoal cashmere coat, a custom-fitted tactical rig strapped over his chest. In his right hand, he carried a suppressed submachine gun; in his left, an antique leather-bound journal bearing the crest of the Apex Council.
Behind him marched a dozen operatives of the Iron Guard, their night-vision optics glowing with faint green malevolence in the dimly lit hall.
"Put the gun down, Henderson," Julian said smoothly, stepping over the shattered porcelain without glancing down. "You’ve poured tea for my father, and you’ve poured tea for me. Don't die for a family whose bloodline is about to become entirely obsolete."
Henderson raised the revolver with steady hands, his jaw set in stubborn defiance. "This house has stood for two hundred years, Mr. Sterling. You will not desecrate it while I draw breath."
Julian didn't even blink. He raised his weapon and squeezed the trigger twice.
Henderson collapsed with a ragged gasp, dropping his weapon as two rounds caught him in the shoulder and chest. He slithered down the walnut wall paneling, leaving a smear of dark crimson.
"Clear the upper levels," Julian commanded his men, stepping over the butler's outstretched hand. "Find Eleanor Whitmore. Bring her to the wine cellar. And bring the thermite drills. The true vault is directly beneath the original colonial foundation."

"Sir!" a lieutenant called out from the courtyard. "Our long-range radar in Maine picked up an anomalous transponder coming in off the Atlantic. High-speed military vector."
Julian paused at the entrance to the cellar stairs, a thin, vicious smile curling his lips. "She survived Svalbard. Of course she did. Naomi wouldn't miss her own execution for the world."
