Chapter 86 - Descent into the Foundations

The wine cellar of Whitmore House was ancient, predating the American Revolution. Heavy, damp-stained granite blocks formed arches that supported the weight of the three-story limestone manor above. For generations, the Whitmores had believed this space was nothing more than a storage room for vintage Bordeaux and family relics.
Julian Sterling stood in the center of the subterranean chamber, illuminating the uneven cobblestone floor with an array of portable halogen work lights.
Two of his men dragged Eleanor Whitmore down the stone stairs. The matriarch was pale, her silver hair disheveled, but she held her chin high despite the zip-ties binding her wrists.
"Julian Sterling," Eleanor said with icy dignity, her voice cutting through the hum of the portable generators. "Your father was a coward, and you are nothing more than a grave robber."
"Your husband wasn't a coward, Eleanor," Julian replied softly, tracing the mortar between two ancient granite blocks with the tip of a titanium pry bar. "He was a traitor to the Apex Council. Forty years ago, when the Council moved to consolidate global financial power through the automated banking grids, your husband and my father stole the Apex Ledger—the ultimate offline cryptographic root key that holds blackmail on every royal house, politician, and intelligence agency in the West."
Eleanor's eyes flashed with anger. "Arthur buried that filth where no one could ever use it to corrupt the world."
"And he built this entire monstrous house right on top of it," Julian chuckled. He pointed the pry bar at the central pillar supporting the vaulted ceiling. "The Leviathan submarine was just the bait. I needed Ethan and his pathetic pet maid to chase shadows across the ocean so I could dig up the prize without interference."
One of the Iron Guard operatives stepped forward with an ultrasound scanner, running the sensor head along the damp foundation stones. The machine beeped in a rapid, continuous tone.
"We have a hollow chamber, sir," the operative announced. "Depth: four feet behind the mortar. Reinforced titanium sleeve encased in lead."
"Drill it," Julian ordered. "Use the thermite cores. We have less than an hour before our uninvited guests arrive."
May you like
The operative ignited a handheld thermite lance. A blinding jet of white-hot fire erupted from the nozzle, hissing violently as it bit into the two-hundred-year-old stone, melting mortar and rock into liquid slag that splattered against the wet floor.
Behind them, tied to a wooden pillar, Eleanor Whitmore whispered a silent prayer into the darkness, hoping that whatever Naomi was, she would be fast enough to stop the devil at their doorstep.
