Chapter 5 - Midnight Confessions in the Kitchen

Three hours after the disastrous gala, the grand Whitmore Mansion had settled into an eerie, heavy silence. The guests were gone, the media vans parked outside the iron gates had dispersed after capturing the dramatic footage, and the glittering chandeliers were dimmed to a soft amber glow.
Naomi stood quietly beside the marble kitchen island, meticulously wiping down the stainless steel surfaces with a damp cloth. Her movements were precise, methodical, and calm.
The heavy oak door swung open softly, and Ethan walked in. He had discarded his tuxedo jacket, his white dress shirt slightly unbuttoned at the collar, making him look less like an untouchable corporate heir and more like the exhausted man Naomi had come to know during their midnight chats.
"They finally left," Ethan said quietly, leaning against the edge of the counter. "The lawyers are dealing with Vanessa’s family. It’s... it’s finally over."
Naomi paused her wiping, looking up at him with cautious eyes. "You didn't have to do that, Mr. Whitmore. Dismissing Miss Sterling in front of high society... it will complicate your corporate alliances."
"My alliances never mattered to her, Naomi. She only cared about the Whitmore name and what she could squeeze out of it," Ethan replied bitterly. He pushed himself off the counter and stepped closer, his hazel eyes searching her face. "And stop calling me Mr. Whitmore. You know my name is Ethan."
Naomi lowered her gaze, stepping back slightly to maintain professional boundaries. "I am a domestic employee here, sir. Protocol exists for a reason."

"Screw protocol," Ethan whispered, closing the distance between them with surprising gentleness. He reached out, stopping her hand as it gripped the cleaning cloth. "You didn't just defend yourself tonight, Naomi. You protected me from a lifetime of misery. And more importantly... you’ve protected my peace for months."
Naomi looked up into his eyes, feeling the warmth of his hand wrapping around her fingers. The emotional intimacy they had built over cups of tea in this very kitchen suddenly pressed against the walls of her self-imposed exile, threatening to break down the walls she had spent years building.
